The rain grew heavier. Water streamed down the tiny barred window of the police transport, blurring the city into streaks of grey as the vehicle cut through the storm.
Inside the rear compartment, Annabel Morris sat quietly with her wrists restrained. She hadn't spoken a single word since leaving the police station, neither had the two officers escorting her.
The silence inside the vehicle was broken only by the steady hum of the engine and the rhythmic sweep of the windscreen wipers.
Outside, traffic was beginning to thin as the transport approached Greywater Bridge.
None of them noticed the black SUV that had been following from a careful distance ever since they left the station.
The transport climbed onto the bridge.
Seconds later...
The driver slammed on the brakes. Tyres screamed against the rain-soaked asphalt. "What the hell?"
A deafening horn blasted through the storm.
The driver yanked the steering wheel. "It's not stopping!"
The officer in the passenger seat looked up just in time to see an oncoming truck hurtling straight towards them. "Move!"
"I can't!" The driver said desperately.
The truck crashed into the side of the transport with terrifying force. Metal twisted and glass exploded.
The entire vehicle spun wildly across the bridge before smashing through the safety barrier.
For one endless second, it hung suspended over the river below...
Then it fell.
The transport slammed into the raging water with a thunderous crash before disappearing beneath the surface.
Within moments, emergency calls flooded the control room.
"Officer transport down!"
"Greywater Bridge!"
"Dispatch rescue units immediately!"
Sirens pierced the night: police cars, fire engines, ambulances... One after another, they raced towards the bridge.
By the time the first responders arrived, only ripples disturbed the surface of the river.
The transport had already disappeared beneath the current.
"Get the divers in!"
"Move!"
Floodlights illuminated the dark water as rescue teams plunged into the river.
Minutes passed.... Then more.
The current fought them every step of the way.
"I've found the vehicle!"
A diver disappeared beneath the surface again.
When he emerged, he ripped off his breathing mask. "The doors are jammed!"
"Cut them open!"
Specialised rescue crews lowered hydraulic equipment into the river.
The operation continued through the night.
One by one, bodies were recovered from the submerged transport.
The first officer, then the second, and then the driver.
Each time a stretcher reached the riverbank, another heavy silence settled over the crowd.
Finally...
A firefighter climbed out of the water carrying an unconscious woman in his arms.
"Pulse?"
A paramedic immediately knelt beside her.
Nothing...
He began chest compressions.
Another fitted an oxygen mask over her face.
"Come on..."
No response.
"Again!"
The paramedics worked desperately beneath the pouring rain.
Minutes passed... then more....
Finally, the senior medic slowly removed his gloves.
He looked at the detective, who had arrived only moments earlier. There was nothing left to say.
The detective stared at the motionless body lying beneath the white sheet.
Rain continued to fall across the bridge. No one moved, and no one spoke.
At exactly 11:47 p.m., the senior medic glanced at his watch before quietly announcing,
"Time of death... 11:47 p.m."
The detective closed his eyes. For the first time that night... He looked defeated.
Far above them, television helicopters circled the bridge as breaking news spread across the country.
